Princess and
Prince (sister and brother-and-law to the king)
Magdalena had been feeling her influence with her brother slip for the past few years, ever since he ignored her advice and sold their sister off to the Dauphin. She had warned her mother and her brother about Lady
Mary. As a woman close to the same age, she could see the young English girl's calculating ways. She was one of the few who knew that Lady
Mary was having a dalliance with Count Aldemar, and that only because she had caught them at it while visiting her mother.
Magdalena was disgusted and tried to get the girl to give her foolish love affair up. "What can you hope to gain from it?" she asked. "Aldemar is married, he is ungenerous, and all he will give you is disgrace, perhaps a child you will have to hide. What possible gain is there for you?"
"A good time is had by all," was all the brazen girl would say. When the Dowager discovered them,
Magdalena wanted her to publicly denounce Aldemar, but she knew that would never be. Not many would think his affair with a pretty young woman was anything to be ashamed of, whether he was hurting someone or not. And she had known
Swanhilda since she was born and didn't want her hurt. She felt rather vindicated, though, and wasn't able to resist giving her brother and mother both a nice round "I told you so" when the girl came up pregnant.
Magdalena was against blaming the poor young servant boy, who was a bit simple in the head but handsome enough to be believable as a temptation for a young girl. He had to be dismissed, but many pitied him as they assumed he had been unfairly seduced by the wily, beautiful older girl.
Magdalena secretly found him a position with one of
Taddeo's friends. At first what to do with Lady
Mary was somewhat of a delicate question for
Walter, as he didn't want everyone in England to think that he and his mother were incapable of looking after an eighteen-year-old girl. The girl was at first very smug, as she assumed that they would have to set her up in a house as Aldemar's mistress. Much to Lady
Mary's astonishment and chagrin, however,
Magdalena's idea was adopted. They would send the girl back to her parents with an outraged letter at her lack of propriety. It was, after all, their fault for not brigning her up properly, and showing outrage that she would flout their kindness would make them seem the victims. They emphasized that the boy she had seduced was soft-headed, showing it wasn't his fault either. As soon as the baby was born--a girl, much to
Magdalena's amusement and heir-obsessed Aldemar's chagrin--the two were packed back off to England.
Shortly after Lady
Mary's disgrace,
Magdalena gave birth as well. With little
Kat growing every day,
Magdalena and
Taddeo had wanted another child and had been very excited when
Magdalena got pregnant. They had both secretly been wanting a boy, as they had a daughter already, but all boys were forgotten in the wake of beautiful
Juliana. The Kaarmann blue eyes have proved to be a strong feature, and
Juliana's shone bright out of her face the moment she opened her eyes. Though
Juliana is something of a demanding baby and had colic for the first month, even
Katarina adored her. She was extremely proud of being a big sister and loves to hold and cuddle and watch
Juliana whenever she can.
Katarina has grown to look a great deal like
Magdalena, but her complexion is darker like
Taddeo's. That and her dark hair make her Kaarmann eyes seem twice as bright.
As soon as
Juliana and
Magdalena were both fit for travel, the little family went to visit
Adelheid in
France.
Magdalena wanted to see her sister and judge for herself if she was in danger of slipping into a dalliance with
Charles, as
Walter evidently thought she was.
Walter was too occupied with the birth of his own new son and obsession with
Hedwig's sister
Eleonore to pay her a visit, so
Magdalena went with his blessing.
Magdalena had missed her sister very much and wanted to see her little niece Kathelein and newborn nephew
Lutz. She approved of the good Bialan nicknames, and both
Adelheid's children were beautiful, healthy, delightful little creatures.
Magdalena saw right away that though
Adelheid was in love with
Charles, it was unspoken and unfulfilled. However, the moment she mentioned it,
Adelheid blew up at her. "Does everyone think I'm so weak? I'm not like you, sister, I can control my feelings for the good of Bial! No matter what I feel for any man, I am, thank God, strong enough to push it aside!"
Magdalena was not upset by the outburst. "I know you are," was all she said. "Forgive me, sister. That isn't what I meant." All she had meant to do, she said, was to praise her for being strong in the face of such temptation, and to say she wished things could be different for her sister so that she could be happy.
Adelheid sat down, a very strange look on her face, but she simply turned the conversation to perhaps having a picnic tomorrow with the children if the weather was fine.

***RowenaRavenclaw: since I had
Magdalena visit them, I thought you might want to add something about it to your own story. I'm curious how
Adelheid felt about her nieces, especially one being named after her, and brother-in-law and her conversation with
Magdalena. Totally up to you whether you add something or don't :)
